I have been at NIST only since September 1998. Immediately prior to coming here, I spent over four years as Program Director for the Knowledge and Cognitive Systems Program, which funds research in artificial intelligence and computational cognitive science at the National Science Foundation . At NSF, I was an IPA employee, sort of "on loan" from my job on the research staff of the Institute for Defense Analyses (IDA) , where I had been employed for nine years. Since I had reached the maximum time to hold an IPA position, I came here to NIST hoping to be able to do some interesting research. I am currently trying to combine software engineering, which I view as extremely important from a practical point of view, with my long-term interest in artificial intelligence.
